A new mom says she’s fighting with her husband after he referred to his own mom as their child’s “first real mom.”
In a post shared to Reddit, the anonymous 29-year-old woman writes, “Our baby is 3 months old. I had a traumatic birth, was in the hospital for longer than expected, and my MIL (60s) stayed with us to ‘help.’ “
The post continues: “She held the baby constantly, told me I was ‘doing it wrong’ when I tried to breastfeed, and would even say things like, ‘She smiles more with me than you, huh?’ “
Recently, the woman and her husband were watching videos of the child and her husband remarked: “It’s so cute how my mom was basically her first real mom while you were recovering.”
“I LOST it,” the woman writes. “I told him that was deeply insulting after everything I went through, and he got defensive and said I was ‘taking it too personally.’ “

Now, the woman writes that her husband is “sulking,” and her mother-in-law sent her a text message accusing her of “being dramatic.”
“Am I overreacting, or was that genuinely hurtful?” the woman writes in ending her post.
Other Reddit users say the woman was not overreacting, and many are urging her husband to keep some distance from his mother.
“That was a ridiculously hideous comment to make,” writes one commenter. “Having had a traumatic birth, I can’t imagine how hurt and furious you must have felt in the moment. I would have been incandescent. What a callous thing to say while you were busy, you know… trying not to die.”
Adds another: “Your husband sounds like he needs to cut the cord … You are back and grandma can back off as well. And when he said you took it too personally, how else were you supposed to take it? Ask him if he was okay with someone else being the real dad since apparently grandma did everything in his eyes!”
