Groom’s ‘Horrifying’ Wedding Prank Leaves Bride ‘Crushed’ and Guests ‘Stunned’

“Nobody thought it was funny,” one wedding guest said

A groom’s wedding ceremony prank didn’t go well.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, an individual recalled the time they attended their co-worker’s wedding ceremony, which was “pretty standard to start” but then took a dark turn.

“When the officiant told the groom to lift the veil, the groom audibly gasped and made a shocked face like his bride was the ugliest thing he’d ever seen,” the wedding guest wrote.

Although partygoers would later learn that the groom’s drastic reaction was his attempt to be “funny,” at the time not a single person saw it that way. The bride was especially hurt by the groom’s disgusted response to her appearance in front of all of their family members and friends.

“I’m pretty sure everyone in the room was stunned and thought, ‘Dude, why the hell would you do that?’ ” the Reddit user remembered. “You could see she was crushed.”

“Nobody thought it was funny,” they added.

The Redditor said that the day only “went downhill from there,” with everyone “getting drunk” quickly at reception, so they left the celebration with their plus-one “pretty early.”

Like their wedding, the couple’s relationship didn’t improve.

“They’re divorced now, which wasn’t much of a surprise,” the Redditor noted.

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users were baffled at why the groom thought it would be a good idea to pull a prank during his wedding ceremony. Some people described the groom’s “horrifying” behavior toward the “poor” bride as “self-sabotaging.”

“What goes through the minds of some idiots?” the top comment reads.” ‘We are standing in front of our nearest and dearest to profess undying love to one another, let me make fun of the way you look.’ “

“Time and place my dude, time and place. Not at a wedding,” another Redditor wrote in part.

Several commenters compared the prank to how some grooms will try to be funny by smashing wedding cake into their bride’s face instead of gently feeding it to them after they cut their cake together. This action can ruin the bride’s makeup, hair style or wedding dress.

“Bet he’s a cake-in-the-face guy, too,” a comment with more than 500 upvotes reads. Someone replied to it, writing, “And he’s also the A-hole who accuses the outraged bride of ‘being too sensitive!’ And, ‘you can’t take a joke!’ “
