After her nephew devoured half of her son’s $140 birthday cake, made the tough decision to cut ties for future parties

  • Mom hosted a party for her son with a $140 cake, but her nephew ate half before it was served
  • When asked for reimbursement, the sister accused her of fatphobia instead
  • This year, the mom honored her son’s wishes by not inviting the nephew but it has lead to a family dispute between sisters

A woman turns to Reddit for support after a previous birthday party disaster involving her nephew that led her to disinvite him from future celebrations.

The mother, 35, shares her story about her son Cillian’s 14th birthday and the family drama that’s still causing ripples a year later when she threw a big party for Cillian, inviting all his cousins and friends to celebrate.

“The party went great for the first half, but when it came time to cut the cake I went over to the fridge to go get it and saw it was half eaten,” she writes in her post.

The cake was a professionally made dessert costing $140 and happened to be a highlight for her son, who adored its special design. The mom explains, “I was obviously upset about this because this had been a cake that I had made by a professional baker that cost me around $140 and my son really loved the design.”

When she asked who had eaten the cake, her nephew Robbie, then 16, admitted to it while his mother laughed it off. “My sister (44f) laughed it off when her son, Robbie, (16m) told her that he ate the cake because he was hungry,” she recalls.

Despite serving a spread of wings, veggie platters, pizzas, chips and sodas, Robbie managed to eat half of the large cake.

“I’m honestly still shocked that with all the food at the party Robbie still managed to clear half of a huge cake, it was enough to produce about 20 slices,” she shares.

With the birthday cake ruined, the mom had to make a last-minute dash to Walmart to buy a replacement, leaving her son without the cake he’d been looking forward to. “I was obviously angry that my son couldn’t have his cake and had to quickly go out and buy one from Walmart,” she says.

After the party, she called her sister to express her disappointment and asked for reimbursement for the expensive cake, but the conversation quickly turned sour.

“She then accused me of being fat phobic which absolutely is not true, I have never once discriminated against Robbie at any time, this was just a false accusation,” she explains. The mom detailed that Robbie has struggled with binge eating since he was 13 and weighs about 250 pounds, but she insists her issue was with his behavior, not his weight.

“My sister has never failed to let anyone know of that and expects for everyone to bend over backwards for Robbie since he has it hard,” she adds.

This year, Cillian requested a smaller, friends-only party, allowing just two cousins to attend, and specifically excluded Robbie.

“I asked why and he explained to me that he was embarrassed of Robbie since all he did was poke fun at his friends and him, bring his own uninvited plus one, and obviously he ate some of the cake,” the mom recounts.

She honored her son’s wishes, inviting only his friends and two cousins, and most of her siblings understood the decision. “Luckily some of my siblings were understanding, the only one who had an issue with this was my sister,” she says.

Her sister called, furious that Robbie wasn’t invited, and accused her once again of having an issue with Robbie’s weight. “My sister was infuriated and said she knew we had an issue with her son’s weight,” the mom writes.

Since then, her sister has given her the silent treatment and taken to Facebook to air her grievances, prompting calls from other relatives and adding to the mother’s stress.

“Since then she has been ranting all over Facebook and I’ve been getting calls from relatives and this entire situation has been stressing me out,” she concludes. Now, the woman doesn’t know how she’ll proceed for future birthday celebrations.
