A North Carolina man wisely followed his brother’s advice and won a huge lottery jackpot as a result.

On Tuesday, June 24, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced that Patrick Kelly won $100,000 when he played a 100X The Cash game.

Kelly told the lottery that he doesn’t regularly play scratch-offs, but decided to take a chance with that particular game at the suggestion of his brother.

“He recommended I buy that one,” Kelly recalled.

He purchased the 100X The Cash ticket for $20 from the Raceway on U.S. 321 in Hickory, per the North Carolina Education Lottery, adding that he didn’t know how to react when he saw how much he won.

“I was dumbfounded,” Kelly said.

On Monday, June 23, Kelly arrived at the lottery offices to claim his prize and left with $71,756 after federal and state tax withholdings.

Kelly said that he celebrated winning the jackpot with his brother.

“We hugged it out,” he said. “It was a good feeling.”

The winner also told the lottery that he would pay off his student loans and invest in his future with the money.

Another person who recently followed his family member’s advice reaped the rewards of winning a lottery prize.

As the Charlotte Observer reported in March, Savion Lytle of South Carolina listened to his mother and won $150,000 after playing the online North Carolina Education Lottery game The Lamp.

“My mom was actually the one who got me into it,” Lytle told the lottery, adding, “This is a blessing.”

Lytle ended up taking home $107,633 after tax withholdings, the lottery said.
